Dr. Middleton is an Assistant Professor at The University of Toronto's Faculty of Medicine.

Dr. Middleton excelled in Head and Neck Cancer and Reconstructive Surgery during his surgical residency at the University of Toronto. He went on to perform many complex microvascular reconstructive surgeries of the face, head and neck, requiring in some cases 21 hours of surgery, while on staff at the Wellesley and Princess Margaret Hospitals.

As a patient consultant, the moral dilemma of cosmetic enhancement is one I have long contemplated. I sincerely believe that if any change in appearance brings about confidence and security in an individual than all that beautifies oneself is not necessarily motivated by vanity and is entirely justifiable. The majority of patients I encounter have reasonable and realistic expectations and therefore are elated by the results of their procedures. The gorgeous smiles I see at follow up visits have always been enough for me to know I am in a business that improves lives.

THEY DON"T NEED TO KNOW

One of the concerns patients have when contemplating a cosmetic procedure is how to deal with questions that they prefer not to answer. The reality is that in most cases people can't figure out what it is that Dr. Middleton's patients have had done. Most comment that a patient looks refreshed and want to know what is it that they are doing differently. Ideally, our patients want people to notice the fantastic changes but the details they would rather keep to themselves. An excellent way to throw off prying eyes is simply to change your hairstyle or the colour of your hair. It really works! (If you are having a facelift make sure to colour your hair before the procedure as it is recommended that you wait several weeks after surgery to do so). So if anybody wants to know, just run your fingers through that beautiful mane and say, "It's my stylist Francois...isn't he a genius?"
